Competition Rules

Information

The club is involved in numerous competitions for the membership to enter and compete in. These include, for example  the League, the Ayrshire, External Club Battles and the Ernie Cave Memorial.  As the club is affiliated to the P.A.G.B, we enter the Scottish Photographic Federation and the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain competitions too.

Each one of these competitions has its own particular requirements in terms of an entry. You will find that all clubs have standard print sizes, standard slide sizes and digital format with specific requirements.

 The Competition Rules

All internally organised competitions (& exhibitions) shall be governed by the rules as follows:

League Competitions

Each season there shall be 5 league competition rounds. Rounds 1, 3 & 5 being “Open” and rounds 2 & 4 “Set Subject”.

In each round there shall be three main categories comprising of Dual Projected Image, Colour Print and Monochrome Print. Dual Projected Image - Slides or Digital File:

Slide
Entries shall be of the 35mm size (ie. 5x5cm mounted). They should be titled, marked with the author’s club number, and correctly spotted in the bottom left hand corner when viewed as they are to appear on the screen.

Digital File
Entries must be submitted on CD (not by email). Images should be submitted in JPEG or TIFF format, sRGB, maximum image size 1400 pixels horizontal, or 1050 pixels vertical (NB. In accordance with current PAGB & SPF guidelines, 1400 x 1050 is the native resolution of the SPF projector so these dimensions will give optimum viewing. See PAGB & SPF Digital File Rules for further information). Image File Names shall be in the form:

“RoundNumber_ClubNumber _ ImageTitle(max 20 letters–no spaces).jpg or .tif” ie. P1_28_TitleOfTheImage.jpg .

Colour Print
The maximum size for each print shall be 50x40cm (20x16”) including mount, and have a minimum print size of 204 sq.cm (35 sq.in) excluding mount. Each print should have the entrant’s club number & category (colour print) stated on the reverse side top left hand corner as the print is to be viewed. The title may be on the front or the rear of the print. Each print should be mounted on strong card.

Monochrome Print:
The requirements are the same as for the colour print, but the category should be stated as monochrome.

Closing Dates
The closing date and subject matter for all competitions will be published in the clubs syllabus and hand-in dates must be strictly adhered to.

Entries
Each member may submit up to 3 entries per category in each league competition round. (In the Dual Projected Image category either up to 3 Slides or up to 3 Digital Files, but NOT a mixture, may be submitted.) Each entry may only be entered once in each category in the club league competition. If an author makes an alteration to an entry, i.e. crops, dodges, manipulates etc., then this will be deemed a new image and will be allowed to be entered as such. An author may wish to re-format an image in order to submit it later in a different category. A re-formatted image should not be entered in another category within the same round.

Entries may be home or trade produced.

Judging & Marking
An external judge will generally be used for each competition round and entries will be marked on a sliding scale from a best of “20” down to “zero”. “1st”, “2nd” & “3rd” places shall be awarded and then if appropriate “Highly Commended” & “Commended”. Only a member’s highest two marks in each category will count towards the appropriate league competition round (a third entry would not be given a mark, although it could still be given a placing or a commendation) For each round the winning entry in each category will receive 10 points, second place will receive 8 and then the next five places on a sliding scale down to 3 points. All other entries will receive 1 point for entering. The overall winner of each league category will be the person who has scored the highest points total over the five rounds.

Return of Entries - It is the responsibility of each entrant to collect their work after each competition. However, by entering work into any of the internal competitions the author agrees that their work may be made available for use by the club in any external competitions.

Definitions and Guidelines

It is understood and agreed that ALL component parts of any image must be of the authors own original work. The use of filters and artificial enhancements in any part of the creation of the image is permissible.

Copyright
Entrants must own copyright of all images or part images used in any submitted image. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his own and thereby permits the Club to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and /or display in related media. The Club assumes no liability for any misuse of copyright by the entrant.

Monochrome (FIAP)
A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.

Prints and Mounts
Must not be framed. - Any Velcro fastening tabs should be removed. – Masking tape should not be used.

Set Subjects
The Set Subjects for league competitions are chosen at the AGM a year in advance (i.e. the 2009-10 season set subjects were chosen at the 2008 AGM). It is up to the individual to make their own interpretation of what qualifies, the judge having the final decision.

Changes to rules require the approval of the members at the AGM or at an SGM.

Revised March. 2008 AGM – A. Kempster Secretary 16/04/08.
